ECMC Data Integrity: Erie Locations

Of the 344 locations identified by the Energy & Carbon Management Commission (ECMC) that are a part of the data falsification initially reported in November, 2024, 5 are in and around Erie, Colorado. Below are additional details about the spills and remediation efforts at these sites.

Bryant 9 & 34-30A Tank Battery

This site has yet to be remediated. According to the most recent remediation action plan, “Excavation and site assessment activities to address remaining soil impacts at the former SEP and AST locations are currently on hold due to wildlife stipulations, as this site is located within a Bald Eagle Active Nest Site Half-Mile Buffer. As such, excavation and site assessment activities are expected to be completed after August 1, 2024.”

Bryant 16, 23, 36-30 Wellheads/Flowlines

This spill Laboratory analytical results from soil and groundwater samples indicated “no impacts encountered.” No further actions were taken. A Notice of Alleged Violation (NOAV) was issued for this location for conducting P&A operations during bald eagle nesting season (the location is 0.25 miles from a bald eagle nest area High Priority Habitat).

Hauck 7, 17, 24-29 O SA Tank Battery

According to the remediation action workplan, 160 cubic yards of impacted fill were excavated and transported to the Front Range Landfill in Erie for disposal. No groundwater was encountered or impacted.

I & J 7-6 and Bulthaup 21-6 Wellheads

According to the remediation action workplan, “a wetland is located approximately 150 feet south of the wellheads and the flowlines pass through a mapped wetland.” Groundwater was encountered 4 ft below ground surface at this site. According to the remediation action workplan, 40 cubic yards of impacted material were excavated and transported to the Front Range Landfill in Erie.

Sawdey 5-30 Wellhead/Flowline

After finding oil, produced water, and condensate during P&A activities, 20 cubic yards of impacted fill were excavated and transported to the Front Range Landfill in Erie for disposal, and 20 cubic yards were excavated and transported to the Kerr-McGee Land Treatment Facility in Weld County for recycling. 5 wells at this location are plugged & abandoned; 2 are shut in.
